An unexpected visitor caused a temporary interruption in the city centre.

If you tried to use Budapest’s M2 metro line in the city centre today, you may have encountered an unexpected interruption. Here is why: a wild boar walked down an out-of-service escalator into Kossuth Lajos tér station.

The animal briefly entered a waiting train before moving onto the tracks and sheltering underneath it. The station was evacuated and closed, but no passengers or staff were injured. Despite some early reports, BKV later said that the boar had not been hit by a moving train. The injured animal was examined by an official veterinarian, who decided that it had to be put down.
For almost an hour and a half, replacement buses operated between Deák Ferenc tér and Déli pályaudvar. Full M2 service resumed at 12:06 and is now running according to schedule. Read BKV’s official account of the incident.
Budapest public transport usually works without wild animals appearing on the platform. Today was a rather unusual exception.
